Abstract

The British Empire expanded throughout its colonial history until it became known as the empire on which the sun never sets. It exploited the economic and human resources of its colonies to achieve its imperial goals and to support its expansionist and defensive wars, as happened during the years of the Second World War, when Britain relied on the resources of allied countries and its former colonies to support its war effort, especially Iraq, which experienced a severe economic crisis during the war years and came under British control over its economic resources.

Iraq was not far from the events of those wars and their political, military, and economic conflicts. Shipping routes and ports were closed, and Iraq suffered an economic crisis due to the توقف of exports and Britain’s control over its resources, as well as a shortage of imports. This prompted the Iraqi government to enact a number of economic laws to regulate internal and external trade.

Here lies the importance of the topic, as Iraq managed to overcome that bitter ordeal thanks to national efforts and legal legislation, in addition to adopting new mechanisms for economic development.

The nature of the topic required that it be divided into an introduction, three sections, and a conclusion. The first section deals with the establishment and formation of the Baghdad Chamber of Commerce. The second section reviews the economic conditions in Iraq during the years of the Second World War. The third section explains the commercial conditions in Iraq during the years of the Second World War. The conclusion includes the most important findings of the research.

The research relied mainly on the materials of the “Baghdad Chamber of Commerce Journal,” which covered the period of the Second World War from September 1939 to May 1945, and is considered one of the documentary sources that recorded Iraq’s economic conditions during that period, in addition to other sources related to the research
