Abstract

ABSTRACT

    This paper is an academic attempt to study the theme of terrorism in the poetic context through applying the statistical stylistic methodology. The relation between literature, namely poetry, as the most aesthetic creative form, and terrorism, as the most extreme phenomenon in society and life, is contradictory and the two cannot be put together in one semantic context. This is because poetry belongs to the human creative aesthetic aspects, the written ones like the story and the novel or the plastic ones like painting, sculpture, music and theatre and other human creative aesthetic forms. This belonging brings poetry in extreme and essential contrast to terrorism in form, concept and social manifestation because terrorism belongs to whatever is aggressive, ugly and extremist and inhuman with no creative or aesthetic aspect. It represents what establishes killing, emigration the expulsion of the other regardless of  his sex, colour, sect and ethnicity as long as he does not belong to the extremist thought of terrorism in its multi-aspect unique image all over the world. This contradiction between poetry and terrorism makes the expression of the latter a creative risk, because how can poetry in its aesthetic language, the density of its emotions and feelings and the supremacy of its thoughts express the worst and ugliest of the social phenomena? On the basis of this, the stylistic analysis attempts, in its inevitable objectivity due to the treatment of a poem dealing with terrorism, to find out the aesthetics of the poetic language in Qabbani’s poem, and how the poet employs the textual stylistic resources with its lexical level , the horizontal structure, paradigmatic imagery in depicting the theme of terrorism from his personal perspective which carries his private poetic touch toward a disputable theme like terrorism.
